Maxi Yatzy rules: six dice, 20 categories
Last updated 12 September 2026 · Läs på svenska · Les på norsk · Læs på dansk
Maxi Yatzy is the six-dice variant of Yatzy played across the Nordic countries. You throw six dice up to three times per turn, fill one of 20 categories, and chase a 100-point bonus when the upper section reaches 84. Unused rerolls can be saved and spent on later turns, which makes it a longer, more strategic game than classic Yatzy. EpicYatzy follows the Swedish Alga Maxi Yatzy rulebook.

How a turn works in Maxi Yatzy
- Throw all six dice.
- Keep and rethrow up to two more times, choosing freely which dice to keep each time.
- Spend saved rolls if you have any and want more throws after the three normal ones. Each saved roll pays for one extra throw.
- Write one score in any empty row, zero included.
- Bank unused rerolls. If you scored after one or two throws, the rerolls you skipped are added to your savings, at most two per turn.
Maxi Yatzy scoring table
| Category | What counts | Score | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ones to Sixes | Dice showing that face | Sum of those dice | 4-4-4-4-2-1 → 16 in Fours |
| Bonus | Upper subtotal of 84 or more | 100 | Four of each face = 84 |
| One pair | Highest pair | Sum of the pair | 6-6-3-2-1-4 → 12 |
| Two pairs | Two pairs of different values | Sum of the four dice | 6-6-5-5-2-1 → 22 |
| Three pairs | Three pairs of different values | Sum of all six | 6-6-5-5-4-4 → 30 |
| Three of a kind | Three equal dice | Sum of the three | 5-5-5-2-1-4 → 15 |
| Four of a kind | Four equal dice | Sum of the four | 4-4-4-4-2-1 → 16 |
| Five of a kind | Five equal dice | Sum of the five | 3-3-3-3-3-6 → 15 |
| Small straight | 1-2-3-4-5 among the dice | 15 | Sixth die is ignored |
| Large straight | 2-3-4-5-6 among the dice | 20 | Sixth die is ignored |
| Full straight | 1-2-3-4-5-6 | 21 | All six dice |
| Full house | A triple and a pair of different values | Sum of those five | 6-6-6-5-5-2 → 28 |
| Two triples (Hus) | Two triples of different values | Sum of all six | 6-6-6-4-4-4 → 30 |
| Tower (Torn) | Four of a kind plus a pair of another value | Sum of all six | 5-5-5-5-3-3 → 26 |
| Chance | Any dice | Sum of all six | 6-5-4-3-2-1 → 21 |
| Maxi Yatzy | Six equal dice | 100 | Fixed score |
As in Yatzy, each die is used once within a combination, and groups in a row must have different values: 6-6-6-6-6-6 is Maxi Yatzy or five of a kind, never two triples.
The 84-point bonus
With six dice the upper target is four of each face: 4 + 8 + 12 + 16 + 20 + 24 = 84. Reaching it pays 100 points, twice the Yatzy bonus, so the upper section matters even more than in the five-dice game. Saved rolls are the usual way to rescue a weak upper row late in the game.
Saved rolls explained
Every normal reroll you skip is banked when you score, at most two per turn, and the balance is public. On any later turn, once your three normal throws are used, you may pay one saved roll per extra throw. There is no cap on savings. Scoring a strong first throw early therefore buys flexibility later, which is the heart of Maxi Yatzy strategy. In EpicYatzy, card rerolls never create saved rolls, and savings reset for a rematch.
Three pairs, two triples and tower
Three pairs needs three different values, each appearing twice, and scores all six dice: 6-6-5-5-4-4 gives 30. Two triples, called Hus in Swedish, is two different values appearing three times each, again scoring all six: 6-6-6-4-4-4 gives 30. Tower, Torn in Swedish, is four of one value and two of another: 5-5-5-5-3-3 gives 26. Five of a kind cannot double as a tower because the pair must be a different value.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Maxi Yatzy and Yatzy?
Maxi Yatzy uses six dice instead of five and 20 categories instead of 15. The upper bonus is 100 points at 84 instead of 50 at 63, five new rows are added (three pairs, five of a kind, full straight, two triples and tower), Maxi Yatzy scores 100, and unused rerolls can be saved for later turns.
How do saved rolls work in Maxi Yatzy?
Every normal reroll you do not use is banked when you score, at most two per turn. On a later turn, after your three normal throws, you may spend one saved roll per extra throw. There is no cap on savings, and the balance is visible to everyone.
Do straights use all six dice in Maxi Yatzy?
The small straight (1 to 5, 15 points) and large straight (2 to 6, 20 points) need only five of the six dice. The full straight is all six dice, 1 to 6, and scores 21.
Why is the Maxi Yatzy bonus threshold 84?
With six dice the target is four of each face: 4 + 8 + 12 + 16 + 20 + 24 = 84. Reaching it earns 100 points, twice the Yatzy bonus.
